US removes highly enriched uranium from Venezuela

Desk : The United States has successfully removed highly enriched uranium (HEU) from Venezuela as part of a significant international nuclear security operation, marking a major step in global non-proliferation efforts.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the material was extracted from a research reactor located near Caracas and safely transported to a secure facility in South Carolina, United States, under strict security protocols.

Officials said approximately 13.5 kilograms of highly enriched uranium were moved through a carefully coordinated operation involving land and sea transport. The mission was carried out in cooperation with the United Kingdom and relevant Venezuelan authorities.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed the operation, describing it as complex but successful. The agency noted that such efforts are crucial in preventing the misuse of nuclear materials and strengthening global nuclear security frameworks.

U.S. officials termed the operation a “significant achievement for international security and cooperation,” emphasizing its importance in reducing nuclear risks worldwide.

Reactions within Venezuela have been mixed. While some view the move as a positive step toward improved international cooperation and security standards, opposition groups have raised concerns over transparency and the handling of the process.

Analysts suggest that the operation reflects broader efforts to strengthen control over sensitive nuclear materials in Latin America and underscores evolving cooperation in global non-proliferation initiatives.
