Desk: Venezuela has been struck by two powerful back-to-back earthquakes, causing widespread destruction across the country. Several multi-storey buildings collapsed in the capital Caracas and surrounding regions, raising fears of massive casualties. In view of the worsening situation, acting President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake measured 7.1 in magnitude with its epicenter located about 168 km west of Morón at a depth of 13 km. A second and more powerful quake of magnitude 7.5 struck just seconds later, with its epicenter about 16 km southwest of Morón at a depth of 10 km. The shallow depth of both quakes significantly intensified the destruction.
Severe damage has been reported from residential areas including Los Palos Grandes, Altamira, and Caricuao in Caracas, where several high-rise buildings collapsed “like a pack of cards.” Rescue and relief operations are underway on a war footing across affected regions.
The government has temporarily shut down the main Maiquetía International Airport and suspended all school and college classes nationwide. Authorities have also urged citizens to remain in open areas as aftershocks remain a concern. Power supply and telecommunications have been disrupted in several parts of the country.
The USGS has warned that the death toll could be extremely high, with preliminary estimates suggesting between 10,000 and 100,000 fatalities. However, these figures have not been officially confirmed.
Initial tsunami warnings issued for coastal regions, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, were later withdrawn.
Meanwhile, in Asia, Japan was also shaken by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake. The tremor was felt in Aomori Prefecture and surrounding areas, with the epicenter reported off the coast of Iwate Prefecture. Japanese authorities have issued alerts and advised caution, although no tsunami warning is currently in place.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the disaster, extending condolences to the victims’ families and offering India’s support and assistance during this difficult time.
Rescue and relief efforts continue in Venezuela as shocking visuals of destruction emerge from multiple regions.
