Washington: US President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning to Iran amid rising tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, saying Tehran “cannot blackmail us.”
Trump made the remarks after reports of a fresh standoff involving the crucial maritime route, one of the world’s most important oil transit chokepoints. The Strait of Hormuz carries a significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, making any disruption a matter of international concern.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said the United States would not bow to pressure and would continue to safeguard freedom of navigation in the region. He also indicated that Washington was closely monitoring developments in the Gulf.
The latest tensions come after Iran signalled stricter control measures around the waterway amid its ongoing confrontation with the United States. Analysts warn that any escalation could affect global energy markets and push oil prices higher.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical strategic passage, linking Gulf oil producers to international markets. Renewed friction in the area has raised fears of a wider regional crisis.
