Paramaribo: India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar paid tribute to the fallen heroes at the “Monument for the Fallen Heroes” in Mariënburg, Suriname, and remembered the struggle and sacrifices of Indian indentured labourers, known as Girmityas. He said their courage and fight for dignity continue to inspire generations across the world.
Recalling the 1902 Mariënburg labour uprising, Jaishankar said the Indian-origin workers had raised their voice against injustice and exploitation despite facing extremely harsh conditions. He noted that the Girmitya community fought with resilience and self-respect to protect their rights and identity.
The External Affairs Minister stated that the relationship between India and Suriname goes beyond diplomacy and is deeply rooted in shared history, culture, and the strong emotional bond with the Indian diaspora. He added that the legacy of the Girmitya struggle serves as a lasting reminder of the values of freedom, justice, and human dignity.
During the visit, Dr. Jaishankar also interacted with members of the Indian-origin community and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Suriname.
Dr. Jaishankar is currently on an official tour of Caribbean nations, where he is holding discussions with leaders on bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, energy, cultural exchange, and engagement with the Indian diaspora.
