Rafale Deal Worth ₹63,887 Crore Between India and France

Desk : India has taken a significant step toward strengthening its air combat capabilities by finalizing an official request to France for the procurement of 114 Rafale fighter aircraft. The formal communication is expected to be sent to the French government in the coming weeks, paving the way for one of the largest fighter aircraft acquisition programs in the country’s history.

The proposed purchase forms part of the Indian Air Force’s efforts to modernize its fleet and address the shortfall in combat squadrons. Defence officials believe the acquisition will substantially enhance the Air Force’s operational readiness and strategic capabilities.

According to officials familiar with the development, a large portion of the aircraft could be manufactured in India under a joint production arrangement, providing a major boost to domestic defence manufacturing and the government’s self-reliance initiatives. Such an arrangement is expected to strengthen India’s aerospace ecosystem while generating skilled employment opportunities.

The Indian Air Force currently operates 36 Rafale fighter jets, which have become an integral part of its frontline combat fleet. The addition of 114 more aircraft would significantly expand the service’s combat strength and help replace ageing platforms being phased out over the coming years.

Defence analysts note that the Air Force has long been facing a shortage of fighter squadrons, making the induction of advanced multirole aircraft a strategic priority. The Rafale, known for its advanced avionics, weapons systems, and operational versatility, is considered one of the most capable fighter aircraft in service today.

If finalized, the deal is expected to rank among India’s largest defence procurement programs and further deepen strategic and defence cooperation between India and France.
