New York City: At least five people were injured in a stabbing incident at New York City’s Penn Station on Sunday evening, according to reports from CBS News. Authorities have taken the suspect into custody and said there is currently no indication that the attack was linked to terrorism.
The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m., according to Amtrak. Officials said at least one of the victims sustained serious injuries and was transported for medical treatment.
Amtrak Police, along with the New York Police Department (NYPD), responded swiftly to the scene. The suspect was apprehended shortly after the attack and remains in custody as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police sources cited by CBS News described the suspect as an emotionally disturbed individual and stated that there was no evidence suggesting a terrorist motive. A law enforcement source familiar with the investigation said preliminary findings indicate the stabbing may have been a random act of violence.
In the aftermath of the incident, authorities urged the public to avoid the area due to anticipated traffic delays, road closures, and disruptions to public transportation services.
Reacting to the incident, New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin expressed concern over the reports and praised first responders for their rapid response.
“We are in touch with the NYPD and will continue to monitor the situation closely as we await additional information,” Menin said in a post on X.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details regarding the victims or the suspect’s identity.
