Srinagar/Kargil : The much-awaited Zojila Tunnel, connecting the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh, is in its final stage of completion. Built at an altitude of around 11,500 feet in the Himalayas, this 13.15-kilometre-long tunnel is considered one of India’s most ambitious and strategically important infrastructure projects.

According to recent updates, excavation work on the tunnel is almost complete, and the final breakthrough between both ends is expected soon, after which finishing and technical works will be carried out.

All-Weather Connectivity to Ladakh

At present, the Zojila Pass remains closed for several months every year due to heavy snowfall, cutting off Ladakh from the rest of the country. Once the tunnel becomes operational, this barrier will be removed, ensuring year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Leh-Kargil.

The travel time will also be significantly reduced. While the current route takes several hours under difficult mountain conditions, the tunnel is expected to reduce travel time to just 15–40 minutes.

Strategic Importance for National Security

The Zojila Tunnel is not just an infrastructure project but also a crucial strategic asset. Ladakh lies in a sensitive border region near China and Pakistan.

During winters, when the pass remains closed, the movement of troops and supply of essential logistics becomes extremely difficult. The tunnel will ensure uninterrupted movement and supply for the armed forces throughout the year.

Boost to Economy and Tourism

The project is expected to boost tourism, trade, and local employment in both Kashmir and Ladakh. Remote regions that remain cut off for months due to snowfall will remain connected throughout the year.

It will also improve access to healthcare, education, and essential goods for local residents.

Engineering Challenge in the Himalayas

The construction of the tunnel in extremely harsh Himalayan terrain, with unstable geology, heavy snowfall, and landslide-prone areas, is considered a major engineering achievement. The project has been executed from both ends simultaneously to reduce time and risk.

It stands as a symbol of India’s engineering capability and infrastructure development in extreme conditions.
