Desk : In a significant diplomatic move aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has written an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposing direct, face-to-face negotiations. This marks the first public appeal of its kind since the conflict escalated in 2022.
In his letter, Zelenskyy emphasized that the prolonged war requires high-level direct dialogue to achieve a lasting solution. He suggested that both leaders meet in a neutral country such as Switzerland, Türkiye, or a Middle Eastern nation to begin peace talks.
The Ukrainian President also proposed an immediate ceasefire during the negotiations, along with a large-scale exchange of prisoners between both sides. He stated that the ongoing war has caused severe losses to both nations and that the time has come to seriously pursue peace.
Zelenskyy further noted that Russia is facing increasing economic pressure, international isolation, and domestic fatigue, arguing that these factors make diplomatic engagement more necessary than ever. He also indicated that Ukraine would continue its defense if peace efforts fail.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin confirmed receipt of the letter and said that President Putin has been informed about it. However, no formal response or decision regarding the proposal has been announced so far.
The proposal comes at a time when the war has entered its fourth year, with continued hostilities on the ground. The international community is closely watching the development, viewing it as a potential step toward renewed peace efforts.
