Doha: World leaders on Monday welcomed the landmark peace agreement announced between the United States and Iran, describing it as a major diplomatic breakthrough that could help restore stability in West Asia, reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, and ease economic pressures caused by months of regional tensions.
The agreement, announced by US President Donald Trump and facilitated through mediation efforts led by Pakistan along with support from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, received widespread international endorsement. Leaders from Qatar, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, Germany and France urged all parties to fully implement the deal and continue pursuing lasting peace through diplomatic engagement.
Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani welcomed the agreement, calling it a positive step toward regional stability. In a statement posted on X, he expressed hope that future negotiations between Washington and Tehran would continue in a constructive and positive spirit.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the memorandum of understanding as an important milestone in strengthening sustainable peace and promoting economic growth both regionally and globally. The ministry also praised Pakistan and other stakeholders for their efforts in reducing tensions and bringing both sides closer to an agreement.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hailed the development as a significant step toward peace and tranquillity in the region. He expressed hope that the agreement would help establish a lasting environment of peace and security across West Asia while cautioning against any actions that could undermine the diplomatic progress achieved. Erdogan also acknowledged the contributions of Pakistan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia to the peace process.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the agreement as a crucial advancement toward ending hostilities, restoring regional stability and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Congratulating President Trump and the mediating nations, Starmer emphasized the importance of fully implementing the memorandum and reiterated the international community’s position that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.
He further stated that the United Kingdom was prepared to support technical negotiations and maritime security initiatives, including mine-clearance operations in coordination with international partners.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also welcomed the agreement, calling it a diplomatic achievement with far-reaching global consequences. He said the breakthrough could contribute to revitalizing the global economy while enhancing security across the Middle East.
French President Emmanuel Macron urged the swift implementation of the agreement and stressed the need for the immediate and unrestricted reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Macron said France and the United Kingdom were ready to assist international efforts aimed at restoring normal maritime traffic in the region.
He also noted that the agreement should serve as a foundation for broader negotiations concerning Iran’s nuclear programme, ballistic missile capabilities and wider regional security issues.
The international reaction followed President Trump’s announcement that negotiations between Washington and Tehran had concluded successfully. In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that the agreement with Iran was complete and expressed optimism about the resumption of global energy flows through the region.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose government played a central mediating role, announced that the agreement had been reached after intensive diplomatic efforts. According to Sharif, both sides had agreed to permanently end military operations, including activities linked to the conflict in Lebanon.
Sharif stated that the formal signing ceremony is scheduled to take place in Switzerland on June 19. He thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye for their support in advancing the diplomatic initiative and said a series of pre-implementation meetings would be held before the official signing to prepare for technical negotiations and execution of the agreement.
The peace deal, expected to be formally signed later this week, is being viewed by the international community as a significant opportunity to reduce tensions in West Asia, revive global trade routes and create conditions for long-term regional peace and economic stability.
