Desk : The death toll from the devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela has climbed to 3,535, while more than 16,700 people have been injured, according to the latest official figures released on Monday.
The powerful earthquakes, which hit the country on June 24, caused widespread destruction across several regions, with the coastal state of La Guaira and areas around the capital, Caracas, suffering the worst damage. Entire neighbourhoods were flattened, thousands of buildings collapsed, and rescue teams continue to search for survivors beneath the rubble.
Authorities said nearly 18,000 people have been left homeless, with thousands currently living in temporary shelters. Relief agencies have expressed concern over overcrowding in these shelters and the growing risk of disease outbreaks due to inadequate sanitation and limited access to clean water.
Search and rescue operations are continuing with the support of local authorities and international aid teams. Officials have warned that the death toll could rise further as many people remain missing and recovery efforts continue.
The Venezuelan government has pledged to intensify relief and rehabilitation measures, while humanitarian organisations are providing food, medical assistance and emergency supplies to those affected.
