Washington: A man has been charged in connection with an alleged assassination attempt targeting former U.S. President Donald Trump during a high-security event in the U.S. capital.
According to federal authorities, the incident took place during a White House Correspondents’ Dinner gathering, where several senior political leaders, journalists, and officials were present. Security personnel reportedly intervened before the suspect could reach the main event area.
Officials identified the accused as a 31-year-old man from California. He has been charged with attempted assassination of a former U.S. president, along with multiple firearms-related offenses.
Security breach at high-profile event
Law enforcement agencies said the suspect was carrying multiple weapons, including firearms and knives, when he was intercepted by security forces. During the confrontation, a brief exchange of gunfire occurred. A Secret Service officer was injured but survived due to protective equipment.
Authorities described the incident as a serious security breach at one of Washington’s most closely guarded annual political events.
Charges and legal action
Federal prosecutors have filed several charges against the accused, including:
