Washington: US President Donald Trump on Thursday indicated a possible easing of tensions with Iran, stating that any proposed military operation targeting Iran’s strategic Kharg Island would be shelved if a pending agreement between Washington and Tehran is finalized. The remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
Speaking at the Oval Office, Trump said that an operation against Kharg Island would no longer be considered if the anticipated agreement is signed. He suggested that negotiations have progressed significantly and expressed confidence that a deal could be concluded within days.
The US President claimed that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz would normalize immediately after the agreement takes effect. He also stated that US forces had successfully facilitated the movement of large quantities of oil through the region in recent months, despite heightened tensions.
Trump attributed Iran’s willingness to engage in diplomacy to sustained military pressure, asserting that recent US operations had significantly weakened Tehran’s military capabilities and leadership structure. According to him, the remaining Iranian leadership has shown a pragmatic approach and is prepared to negotiate.
“We achieved our military objectives early,” Trump said, while adding that Iran now has an opportunity to focus on rebuilding its country through diplomatic engagement.
The President also pointed to improved relations with Venezuela, citing increased oil shipments to the United States and describing bilateral ties as stronger than before. He argued that successful diplomatic outcomes following conflicts are more beneficial than prolonged military engagements.
Trump’s comments follow days of escalating rhetoric and reports of military exchanges involving US and Iranian forces. However, his latest remarks suggest that Washington may now be prioritizing a negotiated settlement over further escalation. While Trump has expressed optimism about an imminent agreement, Iranian officials have indicated that negotiations are continuing and that no final deal has yet been concluded.
