Washington: Amid grand celebrations of the United States’ 250th Independence Day, President Donald Trump turned the National Mall into a stage of historical remembrance, honouring American soldiers, veterans and national icons who shaped the country’s legacy of freedom and sacrifice.
Addressing a large gathering, the President presented the ceremony as a reflection of national unity and shared identity. “We are ONE PEOPLE, ONE FAMILY, with ONE FLAG,” Trump said, adding that the spirit of the Declaration of Independence affirms that all are created in the image of one Almighty God.
The President showcased one of the earliest known American flags, recalling its symbolic presence during the British surrender at Yorktown. He stated that since that moment, the world has recognised that “Americans will never let anyone take our Freedom away.”
The ceremony featured tributes to several war veterans and heroes across generations. Colonel Paris Davis, a Vietnam War veteran and Medal of Honor recipient, was honoured for his service. Captain Ken Schubring, among the last surviving witnesses of the Pearl Harbor attack, also joined the President in saluting historic American flags.
A particularly emotional moment came as 107-year-old Navy veteran and D-Day survivor Arthur Rose was recognised for his role in the Normandy landings, where he saluted the flag carried aboard an early landing craft.
The President also honoured US Army Major Kyle Key, a descendant of Francis Scott Key, who paid tribute to a historic American flag recovered in Nazi-occupied Belgium during World War II.
Korean War veterans Corporal Patrick Finn and Private First Class Rudy Meekins were acknowledged for their bravery during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, where American troops faced overwhelming conditions.
Reiterating his ideological stance, Trump said, “America will NEVER be a Communist country,” adding that communism has consistently failed and stands in opposition to the American system. He stated that American soldiers did not fight communism abroad only for it to resurface domestically.
The event also highlighted the contributions of American astronauts and space pioneers, recognising their role in advancing human exploration beyond Earth.
Trump concluded the ceremony by paying tribute to Gold Star families, honouring those who lost loved ones in military service, and acknowledging their sacrifice as central to the nation’s identity.
Earlier in the evening, the celebration was briefly disrupted due to lightning and severe weather, leading to a temporary evacuation. Addressing the incident, the President thanked attendees for returning, saying their presence made the occasion more meaningful despite the interruption. He described the event as “an evening for the ages,” emphasising its historic significance and emotional weight.
