Washington: Amid a series of high-profile departures in the Trump administration, speculation is growing that FBI Director Kash Patel could be the next senior official to leave his post, according to a media report.

As per Politico, questions are being raised within White House circles about Patel’s future, with internal concerns reportedly intensifying over his position in the administration.

The report suggests that discussions within senior White House corridors have increased following the recent removal of the US Navy Secretary, further fueling speculation over who might be the next top official to exit.

Citing a senior White House official, Politico reported, “It’s only a matter of time,” while referring to Patel’s potential departure. The official, who spoke anonymously on sensitive matters, pointed to increasing negative media attention surrounding Patel, describing it as “not a good look for a Cabinet secretary.” The official also noted that President Donald Trump is reportedly frustrated by the ongoing distraction.

The developments come at a time when the Trump administration has witnessed multiple senior-level exits in recent months. Earlier this week, US Navy Secretary John C. Phelan was removed from his post with immediate effect, with Undersecretary Hung Cao appointed as Acting Secretary of the Navy.

The Pentagon confirmed the move, with Chief spokesperson Sean Parnell thanking Phelan for his service and extending best wishes for his future.

The administration has already seen a wave of departures since March, with at least five senior officials either stepping down or being removed from their roles amid internal pressures.

Among them, Army Chief General Randy George retired earlier than expected, along with the removal of two senior Army officers. Former US Attorney General Pam Bondi also stepped down after a 14-month tenure, while Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned recently to join the private sector.

Additionally, Kristi Noem was removed as Homeland Security Secretary in March and reassigned to a new role as “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” a regional security initiative.

So far, there has been no official confirmation from the White House regarding any decision involving FBI Director Kash Patel, despite rising speculation within political circles.
