As Lohri and Makar Sankranti arrive, the warmth of tradition fills homes with the aroma of sesame and jaggery. These festivals mark the transition of seasons and celebrate gratitude, abundance, and togetherness. Among the many traditional treats prepared on this occasion, sesame–jaggery brittle holds a special place. Simple to make and rich in taste and nutrition, it can be prepared in no time with just a few ingredients.

Ingredients

  • White sesame seeds – 1 cup
  • Jaggery – 1 cup (grated or broken into small pieces)
  • Ghee – 1 teaspoon
  • Cardamom powder – ½ teaspoon (optional)

Method
Heat a heavy-bottom pan and dry-roast the sesame seeds on low flame until they turn lightly golden and release a pleasant aroma. Make sure they do not burn. Once roasted, transfer them to a plate and keep aside.

In the same pan, add ghee and then the jaggery. Allow the jaggery to melt slowly on low heat, stirring continuously. When it melts completely and forms a smooth, slightly thick syrup, add the cardamom powder.

Now add the roasted sesame seeds to the melted jaggery and mix well. Turn off the heat immediately. Pour the mixture onto a greased plate or butter paper. Spread it evenly using a spoon or rolling pin and cut into desired shapes while it is still warm.

Serving Suggestion
Once cooled, the sesame–jaggery brittle becomes firm and ready to serve. It can be enjoyed with tea or offered as festive prasad. Stored in an airtight container, it stays fresh for several days.

Prepared during Lohri and Makar Sankranti, this sesame–jaggery brittle is more than a sweet—it is a wholesome blend of tradition, health, and festive joy that brings warmth and sweetness to winter celebrations.
