Summer evenings often bring sudden cravings for something hot, crispy, and flavorful. Instead of ordering snacks from outside, you can easily prepare these crunchy potato-onion fritters at home with a simple twist — bread crumbs. Adding bread not only gives the pakoras an extra crispy texture but also makes them taste more like street-style snacks.
This easy recipe requires basic kitchen ingredients and can quickly become a favorite evening snack for the entire family.
Ingredients
- 2 large potatoes
- 2 medium onions
- 4 bread slices
- 1 cup gram flour (besan)
- 2 finely chopped green chilies
- 1 teaspoon ginger paste
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain)
- Salt as per taste
- Fresh coriander leaves
- Oil for deep frying
Method
Start by thinly slicing the potatoes and onions. Next, grind the bread slices into fine crumbs. These bread crumbs are the secret ingredient that gives the fritters their perfect crunch.
Take a large mixing bowl and add gram flour, red chili powder, turmeric, carom seeds, ginger paste, green chilies, and salt. Gradually add water and prepare a thick batter. Make sure the batter is not too runny.
Now mix the bread crumbs into the batter and stir well. Add the sliced potatoes and onions, coating them properly with the mixture.
Heat oil in a deep pan. Once the oil becomes hot, carefully drop small portions of the mixture into it. Fry on medium flame until the fritters turn golden brown and crispy. Avoid frying on very high heat, as it may cook the outside quickly while leaving the inside undercooked.
Remove the fritters onto a tissue paper to absorb excess oil.
Serving Suggestion
Serve these hot and crispy potato-onion fritters with green chutney, tomato ketchup, or a chilled summer tea during evening snack time. You can also sprinkle a little chaat masala on top for extra flavor.
This simple bread twist transforms ordinary pakoras into a crunchy and irresistible snack that everyone will enjoy.
