In Hindu tradition, Pradosh Vrat holds great spiritual significance. The combination of Monday and Pradosh is considered especially auspicious for the worship of Lord Shiva. On this day, devotees perform prayers and rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva with complete devotion and proper rituals. It is believed that observing Pradosh Vrat brings peace, prosperity, and happiness into life while fulfilling the wishes of the devotees.

According to the Hindu calendar, Pradosh Vrat is observed on the Trayodashi Tithi (13th lunar day) of both the Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha every month. The name of the fast changes depending on the weekday on which it falls. For example, if it falls on Monday, it is called Som Pradosh Vrat, while Tuesday’s Pradosh is called Bhaum Pradosh Vrat. Each Pradosh fast carries its own religious significance.

Spiritual Significance of Pradosh Vrat

As per Hindu beliefs, the period between sunset and nightfall on Trayodashi is known as Pradosh Kaal, which is considered the most auspicious time to worship Lord Shiva. It is believed that the Pradosh Vrat was first observed by Chandra Dev (the Moon God) to get relief from his afflictions.

When is the First Pradosh Vrat in March 2026?

According to the Hindu Panchang, the first Pradosh Vrat of March 2026 will be observed on 16 March 2026. Since this day falls on a Monday, it will be known as Som Pradosh Vrat.

Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiva, which further enhances the importance of this vrat. Religious beliefs suggest that observing Som Pradosh Vrat with devotion brings the blessings of Lord Shiva. It is also believed to strengthen marital harmony and remove obstacles from life.

According to the Panchang, the Krishna Paksha Trayodashi Tithi will begin on:

16 March 2026 at 9:40 AM

and will end on:

17 March 2026 at 9:23 AM

The main worship for Pradosh Vrat is performed during the Pradosh Kaal in the evening, around sunset, which is considered the most sacred time for offering prayers to Lord Shiva.

Pradosh Vrat Puja Rituals

On the day of Pradosh Vrat, devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean and light-colored clothes. After this, they take a vow to observe the fast while remembering Lord Shiva.

Devotees offer water to the Shivling and perform Jalabhishek. The fast is generally observed with fruits and light fasting during the day. Since the main worship takes place during the Pradosh Kaal, it is considered auspicious to take another bath before the evening prayers.

During the evening puja, devotees offer water, Bilva leaves, incense, lamps, and prasad to Lord Shiva. Listening to or reciting the Pradosh Vrat Katha and performing the Shiva Aarti is an important part of the ritual. After the aarti, devotees consume the prasad to conclude the fast. Some devotees may also choose to have one meal of sattvic food during the day.

Special Remedies on Pradosh Vrat

For freedom from sins
Offering sesame seeds on the Shivling on the day of Pradosh Vrat is considered highly beneficial. It is believed that performing abhishek with sesame seeds helps remove past sins and brings positivity into life.

For financial prosperity
Devotees may offer raw rice to the Shivling on this day. It is believed that this practice brings financial growth and removes obstacles related to wealth.

For a happy married life
To bring sweetness and harmony into married life, offering a mixture of curd and honey as bhog to Lord Shiva is considered auspicious.

To remove obstacles in marriage
If someone is facing delays or difficulties in marriage, they can sit before Lord Shiva after bathing and chant the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” eleven times with devotion. After completing the chant, offer flowers to the deity. It is believed that this remedy helps remove obstacles related to marriage.

Observing Pradosh Vrat with faith and devotion is believed to bring spiritual peace, prosperity, and balance in life. Devotees believe that the blessings of Lord Shiva can bring positive transformation and divine grace into their lives.
