The United States successfully rescued its pilot, who had been hiding in a mountainous region of Iran for two days. This operation was nothing short of miraculous, as the mission took place in a country with which the U.S. had been engaged in conflict for over a month. Dozens of U.S. aircraft patrolled the skies in search of the pilot, but it was a small device that played the pivotal role, transmitting location and other crucial details to the American forces. This revealed that the pilot was hiding in a rugged mountain crevice.
The Device That Made It Possible
At the heart of the mission was a small, satellite-based communication device weighing just around 800 grams, known as the CSEL (Combat Survivor Evader Locator). According to Ynetnews, it was developed by Boeing and connects directly to satellites. About the size of a human palm, it resembles a combination of a robust military radio and a handheld computer.
The device is strapped around the pilot’s waist so that when the pilot ejects from a fighter jet during an emergency, the device stays with them. Once the pilot ejects, it immediately begins sending encrypted data. Using rapid frequency-hopping signals, it continuously transmits location coordinates and short encrypted messages, making it extremely difficult for enemy electronic warfare systems to detect.
Operational Even Under Extreme Conditions
The CSEL device functions under almost any condition. Much like a flight’s black box records crucial data during a crash, the CSEL stays connected to the soldier or pilot. This is how the U.S. military was able to track the pilot’s exact location. The device works even when submerged up to ten meters underwater and has a battery life of up to 21 days. A single button allows the pilot or soldier to signal distress, initiating the rescue process. During this mission, the device sent encrypted messages with precise location updates every few hours, preventing the Iranian military from pinpointing the pilot.
Pilot Hides in Mountain Crevice
According to The New York Times, the U.S. Air Force pilot’s F-15 jet was shot down over Iran. To evade capture, he climbed into a mountain crevice and ascended up to 7,000 feet. After a grueling two-day rescue operation, the U.S. military successfully retrieved him.
On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump described the rescue as an extraordinary display of courage and skill. The Iranian government had reportedly placed a bounty on the pilot. Trump posted, “We rescued a seriously wounded and truly courageous F-15 crew member/officer from deep within the mountains of Iran. The Iranian forces were searching for him in large numbers and came very close to finding him.”
