Robots on the Battlefield: Ukraine Expands High-Tech Warfare Against Russia

Desk : Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia is undergoing a rapid transformation, with modern warfare increasingly being driven by machines rather than soldiers on the ground. Far from the frontlines, Ukrainian commanders who once led troops in intense combat zones are now directing operations through screens, live drone feeds and remotely controlled systems.

According to a CNN report, a single military operation can now involve multiple explosive-laden robotic units targeting Russian positions without any Ukrainian soldier physically entering the battlefield. These missions are coordinated using reconnaissance drones that provide real-time surveillance, while operators control robotic systems from secure command centres.

Facing a prolonged manpower shortage and uncertainty over continued Western military support, Ukraine has significantly expanded its reliance on unmanned systems. Drones, robotic ground vehicles and remotely operated weapons platforms are now playing an increasingly central role in Kyiv’s defence strategy, offering a technological edge against Russia’s larger conventional forces.

In April, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukrainian forces had, for the first time, successfully captured a Russian position using only drones and robotic systems. He also noted that unmanned systems had conducted nearly 22,000 missions since the beginning of the year.

Ukrainian troops have reported that Russian soldiers have nicknamed these robotic explosive carriers “silent death.” According to accounts from the battlefield, the machines can move so quietly that Russian positions often detect them only when they are within approximately 10 metres—leaving little time to respond before detonation.

The shift has been particularly striking for commanders with experience in earlier phases of the war. Bar, a Ukrainian deputy commander who previously fought in the Donbas region, described the change as extraordinary. “I couldn’t even imagine such a thing back then,” he said, adding that such technology could have saved many lives earlier in the conflict.

Reflecting on the evolution of warfare, he noted that combat has shifted away from physical endurance and tactical skill on the ground toward technological superiority and remote operation. “Now, technology decides everything. There is no going back,” he said.

Ukraine’s growing dependence on automation is also driven by necessity. After years of sustained conflict and heavy casualties, the country’s limited manpower has pushed military planners to accelerate drone production and improve unmanned combat capabilities.

Ukrainian officials have stated that they aim to inflict approximately 35,000 Russian casualties per month, a target they claim has been achieved in recent months. The strategy is intended to increase pressure on Moscow by forcing it to rely more heavily on recruitment from urban populations and the middle class.

Meanwhile, a recent assessment by the United Kingdom’s intelligence agency GCHQ estimated that Russia’s total military fatalities have reached around 500,000 since the beginning of the conflict.

What was once considered experimental technology on the battlefield has now become a routine element of modern warfare. Robots are increasingly being used not only for combat operations but also for evacuating wounded soldiers, transporting supplies to frontline positions and conducting targeted strikes—underscoring how rapidly the nature of war is evolving in Europe’s most intense conflict in decades.
