Desk : A fresh controversy has erupted in Canada over the activities of pro-Khalistan groups after protesters allegedly attempted to block the convoy of Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Patnaik in Brampton. Reports of disrespect towards the Indian national flag during the demonstration have further intensified concerns.
According to reports, the incident took place on May 26 outside the Pearson Convention Center in Brampton. Videos circulating on social media showed protesters carrying Khalistan flags and banners while moving close to the convoy of the Indian diplomat. The demonstrators were seen raising slogans and attempting to obstruct the movement of the convoy.
The incident also sparked outrage after allegations surfaced that some protesters disrespected and damaged the Indian tricolour. Members of the Indian community in Canada expressed anger over the development. Questions have also been raised regarding the response of the Canadian police present at the spot. Critics alleged that while officers tried to manage the crowd, no immediate strict action was taken against those involved.
The development comes at a time when India and Canada are attempting to stabilize bilateral ties. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is currently visiting Canada for discussions related to trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Relations between India and Canada had deteriorated sharply in 2023 following the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had made allegations against India, which New Delhi firmly rejected. The episode had triggered a major diplomatic dispute between the two nations.
Members of the Indian diaspora have repeatedly raised concerns over the growing activities of pro-Khalistan groups in Canada. The latest incident has once again brought the issue of security for Indian diplomats and the Indian community into focus.
