New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held bilateral talks with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing at Hyderabad House in the national capital. The meeting comes during the Myanmar President’s official visit to India from May 30 to June 2 at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi.
This is President Min Aung Hlaing’s first visit to India in his current role as President of Myanmar. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising Cabinet ministers, senior government officials, and leading business representatives.
The visit is aimed at strengthening the longstanding relationship between India and Myanmar, with discussions expected to focus on connectivity, security cooperation, trade, regional stability, and people-to-people ties.
Ahead of the Prime Minister-level meeting, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval called on President Min Aung Hlaing on Sunday. Confirming the interaction, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the two leaders exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.
Earlier, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met the Myanmar President in New Delhi and welcomed his positive outlook towards enhancing bilateral cooperation. In a message shared on social media, Jaishankar expressed appreciation for Myanmar’s commitment to deepening ties with India and said he looked forward to the President’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi to further advance the partnership between the two nations.
Before arriving in New Delhi, President Min Aung Hlaing visited Bodh Gaya in Bihar, one of Buddhism’s most revered pilgrimage destinations. During his visit, he offered prayers at the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of the deep civilisational and spiritual links between India and Myanmar.
The Ministry of External Affairs has indicated that the ongoing discussions will cover a broad range of bilateral, regional, and international issues, reflecting the growing importance of India-Myanmar relations in the region.
