Desk : Pakistan has ruled out joining the Abraham Accords, with Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif stating that Islamabad would not support any agreement that contradicts the country’s “fundamental ideologies.”
Speaking in an interview with Pakistani broadcaster Samaa TV, Asif dismissed the possibility of Pakistan normalising relations with Israel despite recent diplomatic signals from US President Donald Trump encouraging more Muslim-majority nations to join the accords.
“Personally, I don’t think we should join any such accord that clashes with our fundamental ideologies,” Asif said. Questioning the reliability of engagement with Israel, he added, “How will you sit down with those people whose word cannot be trusted even for a single day?”
Reiterating Pakistan’s longstanding position, Asif said that recognition of Israel remains unacceptable to Islamabad. He also pointed to Pakistan’s passport policy as evidence of the country’s stance, noting that Pakistan is among the few countries that do not recognise Israel and do not include it as a valid destination on their passports.
The remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump publicly urged several Muslim and Arab nations to join the Abraham Accords as part of a broader regional framework linked to ongoing negotiations with Iran.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump described the proposed arrangement as a potential “historic event” for the Middle East and called on countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain to sign on to the accords.
Trump said negotiations with Iran were “proceeding nicely” and suggested that a successful agreement could pave the way for wider regional cooperation. He argued that the Abraham Accords had already brought significant economic and social benefits to existing members, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan.
According to Trump, several regional leaders had expressed support for expanding the framework following discussions with US representatives. He also claimed that Iran could eventually become part of the arrangement if a comprehensive agreement with Washington is reached.
The Abraham Accords, brokered by the United States in 2020, established diplomatic, economic and security ties between Israel and several Arab nations, marking a major shift in Middle Eastern geopolitics. However, Pakistan has consistently maintained that any change in its position toward Israel would depend on a just resolution of the Palestinian issue.
