New Delhi: Reaffirming its “Neighbourhood First” policy, India has extended substantial medical assistance to the Maldives to help the island nation tackle a growing measles outbreak. The Government of India has dispatched 20,000 doses of the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine along with nearly three tonnes of essential medical supplies to strengthen the country’s vaccination efforts and disease response mechanisms.

Confirming the development on social media platform X, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India remains committed to supporting the Maldives in safeguarding public health and enhancing immunization coverage. The assistance package includes MR vaccine doses, medicines, syringes, diagnostic kits, and other critical medical equipment required to contain the spread of the disease.

According to the MEA, the timely support will help Maldivian authorities manage the increasing number of measles cases and strengthen their healthcare response capabilities.

A Reflection of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy

The Maldives occupies a significant place in India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy as well as its “Vision MAHASAGAR” initiative. Over the years, the two countries have maintained close cooperation across sectors including healthcare, development, security, and humanitarian assistance. India’s swift response during times of crisis has remained a cornerstone of its regional diplomacy.

Return of Measles Raises Public Health Concerns

The resurgence of measles in the Maldives has emerged as a matter of concern for health authorities. Notably, the World Health Organization had certified the Maldives as a measles-free country in 2021. The re-emergence of the disease after its elimination underscores the challenges of maintaining disease-free status and highlights the need for sustained immunization efforts.

What is Measles?

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects children. It spreads through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Symptoms typically appear 10 to 12 days after exposure and include high fever, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and small white spots inside the mouth. A characteristic red rash then develops, usually beginning on the face and neck before spreading across the body.

Vaccination Remains the Most Effective Protection

Health experts and the WHO emphasize that widespread immunization remains the most effective tool against measles. Elimination strategies have the potential to prevent more than a million cases annually and save countless lives. Between 2020 and 2023, a combination of vaccination campaigns and public health interventions helped avert an estimated 1.1 million measles-related deaths globally, demonstrating the immense value of continued investment in immunization programs.

India’s latest assistance is expected to support the Maldives in controlling the outbreak while further strengthening the longstanding partnership and humanitarian cooperation between the two nations.
