A major revelation has emerged regarding Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad, with reports identifying the mysterious operative known only as “M” as Erez Shimoni — a senior intelligence officer believed to have played a crucial role in covert operations against Iran.
According to reports, Mossad chief David Barnea disclosed during a memorial ceremony that the secret missions led by “M” laid the groundwork for Israel’s military campaign known as “Operation Roaring Lion.” He reportedly praised the operative’s strategic planning and contribution to Israel’s national security.
Who Was Erez Shimoni?
Erez Shimoni was reportedly around 50 years old and had served in Mossad for nearly three decades. He was described as a highly skilled intelligence professional with expertise in technology, covert networks, and planning complex international missions.
Officials familiar with his work said Shimoni played a central role in operations aimed at countering Iran’s strategic and military capabilities.
Death in Italy Boat Tragedy
Shimoni died on May 28, 2023, in a boating accident on Lake Maggiore. The incident also claimed the lives of two Italian intelligence officers and the wife of the boat’s captain.
He was later buried in Ashkelon, where security arrangements during the funeral reportedly reflected the secrecy surrounding his role.
Secretive Funeral
Reports said several senior intelligence officials attended the funeral wearing hats and face coverings to conceal their identities. Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office had also stated at the time that Shimoni’s responsibilities were highly sensitive and details of his work could not be made public.
Face of the Shadow War Against Iran
Security analysts say Mossad has long been involved in covert efforts targeting Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure. With this latest disclosure, Erez Shimoni is now being seen as one of the key behind-the-scenes figures in that long-running shadow conflict.
