Modi, Rubio Hold Hour-Long Talks, Deepen India-U.S. Strategic Cooperation

New Delhi :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held wide-ranging discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at Sewa Teerth in the national capital, as the two leaders reviewed the growing trajectory of India-U.S. relations and explored new avenues of cooperation in defence, trade, technology, energy security and regional stability.

The meeting, which lasted for more than an hour, marked a significant engagement during Rubio’s first official visit to India since assuming office as America’s top diplomat. The talks come at a time when New Delhi and Washington are seeking to deepen their strategic partnership amid evolving geopolitical challenges and growing concerns over security in the Indo-Pacific region.

According to official sources, the discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, with particular emphasis on defence collaboration, emerging technologies, critical supply chains, clean energy initiatives and economic engagement. Both sides also exchanged views on key regional and global developments and underscored the importance of maintaining peace, stability and a rules-based international order.

Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to further strengthening ties with the United States, describing the bilateral relationship as one of the most consequential partnerships of the 21st century. The two leaders reviewed progress made under the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and expressed satisfaction over the expanding scope of cooperation between the two democracies.

Sources familiar with the discussions said energy security emerged as a major area of focus, with both sides exploring opportunities to enhance collaboration in conventional and renewable energy sectors. The leaders also discussed ways to boost investment, innovation and technological cooperation, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing and digital infrastructure.

Defence cooperation also featured prominently during the talks. India and the United States have significantly expanded military engagement over the past decade through joint exercises, defence acquisitions and strategic agreements. The meeting reviewed ongoing initiatives aimed at increasing interoperability between the armed forces of the two countries and strengthening defence industrial cooperation.

The Indo-Pacific region was another key subject on the agenda. Both leaders reiterated their support for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific and emphasized the importance of closer coordination among like-minded nations to ensure maritime security and regional stability. Discussions also touched upon developments in the broader Asia-Pacific region and efforts to address emerging security challenges.

Rubio’s visit is being viewed as an important step in maintaining momentum in India-U.S. relations under the current administrations in both countries. Diplomatic observers noted that the visit reflects Washington’s continued recognition of India’s growing role in global affairs and its importance as a strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific.

Prior to arriving in New Delhi, Rubio visited Kolkata, where he toured the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity and interacted with members of the charitable organization. During his stay in the capital, he is also scheduled to hold separate talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and participate in meetings focused on regional and multilateral cooperation.

The visit is expected to culminate with discussions related to the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), which brings together India, the United States, Japan and Australia. The grouping has increasingly become a key platform for cooperation on issues ranging from maritime security and disaster response to technology and economic resilience.

Officials on both sides described the Modi-Rubio meeting as constructive and forward-looking, reflecting the shared commitment of India and the United States to further deepen their strategic partnership and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
