New Delhi : India’s air defence capabilities have received a significant boost with the arrival of the fourth squadron of the advanced S-400 air defence missile system from Russia. The delivery forms part of the 2018 multi-billion-dollar defence agreement under which India is set to receive a total of five S-400 squadrons.
According to defence sources, the fourth squadron has been transported to India via sea route and will soon be deployed at strategically important locations. The system is expected to further enhance India’s long-range air surveillance and interception capabilities.
The S-400 system, also known as the “Sudarshan Chakra,” is considered one of the most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence systems in the world. It is capable of detecting and destroying a wide range of aerial threats, including fighter jets, drones, and ballistic missiles. Its deployment is expected to significantly strengthen India’s border air defence grid.
Reports indicate that three squadrons have already been delivered earlier, while the remaining units are expected to arrive in the coming months. With the arrival of the fourth squadron, India moves one step closer to completing the full induction of the system under the agreement.
Defence experts believe that the addition of the S-400 system will enhance India’s multi-layered air defence architecture and improve its ability to respond swiftly to any potential aerial threat.
