India’s Presence Signals Changing Global Order, Says Mark Carney at G7

Paris: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has acknowledged India’s growing global influence, stating that its participation in the G7 reflects the evolving nature of the international order. Speaking ahead of the G7 Summit in France, Carney said the grouping can no longer claim dominance over global affairs and must now rely on broader international cooperation beyond its traditional members.

During a discussion at Trinity College Dublin as part of his six-day European tour, Carney remarked that the inclusion of countries like India highlights G7’s recognition that addressing major global challenges requires wider perspectives. “This is an acknowledgment that if the G7 ever ran the world, it no longer does, nor does it pretend to,” he said.

India has been participating in G7 meetings as an invited guest for at least the past two decades. The 52nd G7 Summit, beginning in Evian, France, will see participation from G7 members along with invited nations including India, Brazil, Egypt, Kenya, and several Gulf countries. According to Carney, these countries bring a broader range of perspectives and solutions to global issues.

He further said the summit could help shape the framework of a new world order, recalling his earlier remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he called for middle powers to collectively address rising geopolitical challenges.

The summit agenda is expected to focus on global economic stability, energy and health security, conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and the governance of artificial intelligence. Highlighting rapid AI development, Carney warned that the sector remains largely unregulated globally, stressing the need for common standards and safeguards as a key discussion point.

The G7 includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.

The summit will be attended by leaders including US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. EU representation will be led by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa.

Invited leaders include Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, and Kenyan President William Ruto.
