New Delhi: Reaffirming the strength of India-Russia relations, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Thursday said the two nations share a “special bond” that has stood the test of time and continues to serve as a pillar of stability in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
Speaking at the National Day celebrations of the Russia, Misri said the special and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia has grown stronger over the years, supported by sustained high-level exchanges and cooperation across multiple sectors.
He noted that India remains committed to working closely with Russia to promote dialogue, strengthen multilateral cooperation, and address common global challenges. Looking ahead, Misri said India is preparing to welcome Vladimir Putin to New Delhi for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit scheduled for September 2026, describing the event as an important opportunity to advance shared objectives and deepen bilateral ties.
Highlighting the broader international context, Misri said both countries are united in their commitment to a multipolar, inclusive and more representative global order. He emphasized that this shared vision is particularly relevant at a time when the world faces ongoing conflicts, economic uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, and rising geopolitical tensions.
The Foreign Secretary also acknowledged Russia’s continued support in advancing cooperation within the BRICS framework and said significant progress across various BRICS initiatives has laid the groundwork for deeper collaboration in the coming years.
Describing India-Russia relations as an “anchor of stability,” Misri underscored the importance of expanding economic cooperation. He noted that the leaders of both countries have set an ambitious target of increasing bilateral trade to USD 100 billion by 2030.
He further stated that cooperation in defence, civil nuclear energy, and space sectors continues to progress steadily. Both nations are also exploring new connectivity projects aimed at unlocking the full potential of economic ties, while collaboration in the Arctic region has emerged as another key area of partnership.
Addressing the gathering, Denis Alipov congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving Prime Minister. Extending greetings on behalf of President Putin, the Russian government and people, Alipov described the achievement as a historic milestone and conveyed Russia’s heartfelt congratulations to the Prime Minister and the people of India.
