New Delhi : India has expressed cautious concern over Bangladesh’s engagement with China in the Teesta River project and the proposed China–Bangladesh–Myanmar Economic Corridor (CBMEC), stating that it is closely monitoring developments in its neighbourhood with strategic and security implications.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India has already conveyed its position to Bangladesh on the matter. The ministry added that the government is carefully assessing all such developments from a broader strategic and security perspective and will take appropriate measures if required.
Recently, Bangladesh and China agreed to cooperate on the comprehensive management and restoration of the Teesta River project. In addition, China has proposed a regional economic corridor connecting Bangladesh and Myanmar, aimed at boosting infrastructure development and trade connectivity.
However, India’s concern primarily stems from the strategic implications of these initiatives, especially given their proximity to sensitive regions such as the Siliguri Corridor and parts of the northeastern border areas. Security experts believe such projects could influence the regional geopolitical balance.
China has responded to these concerns by stating that its cooperation is not directed against any third country and is purely development-oriented. Bangladesh, meanwhile, has described these initiatives as essential for strengthening its infrastructure and water resource management.
India has reiterated its commitment to regional stability, mutual cooperation, and transparent water-sharing mechanisms, while maintaining close watch on evolving developments.
