Kalpakkam : India has achieved a landmark breakthrough in clean energy technology with the launch of the world’s first nuclear-based hydrogen production hub. The advanced facility has been established at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam.
Developed under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), the project marks a significant step in expanding the application of nuclear energy beyond electricity generation.
Hydrogen Production Using Nuclear Heat
The facility will utilize heat generated from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) to produce hydrogen through the Copper–Chlorine (Cu–Cl) thermochemical cycle.
This innovative process enables hydrogen production without the use of fossil fuels, making it a major advancement toward zero-carbon energy solutions.
Indigenous Technological Milestone
Developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the project is regarded as a fully indigenous technological achievement.
Officials have described it as a technology demonstrator designed to pave the way for large-scale hydrogen production in the future.
New Direction for India’s Energy Strategy
With this development, India has expanded the role of nuclear energy beyond power generation into clean fuel production.
Experts believe the initiative will strengthen India’s energy security and significantly contribute to its long-term net-zero emission goals.
