Packing food for travel often turns into a small challenge—especially when mothers lovingly send pickle jars along to hostels or long journeys. No matter how tightly the lid seems to be closed, pickle oil has a habit of leaking out, staining clothes and filling the entire bag with its strong aroma. If this has ever happened to you, this simple and practical hack can save you from the mess.
A Simple Hack to Make Pickle Containers Leak-Proof
Even so-called airtight containers can fail when it comes to storing pickles. The oil and spices may seep out, leaving greasy marks and an unpleasant smell on everything around. To avoid this, try the following easy trick. It works especially well for plastic containers.
Take a plastic container filled with pickle. Cut a piece of aluminum foil slightly larger than the mouth of the container. Remove the lid and place the foil neatly over the opening, shaping it to match the container’s rim.
Now heat an iron (press) to its maximum temperature. Once it is hot, gently run it along the edges of the container’s mouth, over the foil. The heat will slightly soften the plastic, allowing the aluminum foil to seal tightly onto the rim. This creates an effective barrier that prevents oil from leaking out.
Once the foil is sealed, simply close the lid as usual. The pickle oil will stay inside, keeping your bag clean and odor-free.
The Polythene Trick That Also Works
If you are carrying pickles in a glass jar or in a container that cannot be exposed to heat, there is another easy solution. Place a thin sheet of polythene over the mouth of the jar and then screw the lid on tightly. This extra layer helps block any leakage and keeps the oil from escaping.
This idea is not limited to pickles alone. You can use the same trick for carrying any liquid—such as cooking oil, vinegar, or sauces—when traveling. A small precaution like this can spare you a lot of inconvenience and keep your luggage fresh and clean.
