New Delhi: On the completion of 11 years of the Digital India programme, India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has described the country’s digital journey as a historic example of large-scale digital transformation and global leadership in digital public infrastructure.
Launched in 2015, the Digital India initiative has significantly transformed governance, financial transactions, and public service delivery across the country. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the world’s largest and most impactful digital ecosystems.
UPI Becomes the World’s Largest Real-Time Payment System
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has positioned India as a global leader in digital payments. In the financial year 2025–26, UPI recorded more than 24,000 crore transactions, making it the largest real-time digital payment system in the world.
Since its expansion after 2016, UPI has witnessed exponential growth and is now being adopted in several countries, further extending India’s digital payment infrastructure at a global level.
DigiLocker Transforms Document Management
DigiLocker, India’s digital document storage platform, has significantly simplified access to official certificates and documents for citizens. By March 2026, more than 850 crore documents had been securely stored on the platform, improving ease of verification and reducing dependence on physical documentation.
Strengthening Governance and Digital Inclusion
The Digital India mission has played a key role in expanding digital access across both rural and urban areas. Services in banking, education, healthcare, agriculture, and government welfare schemes have become faster, more transparent, and more efficient through digital delivery systems.
India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations described this progress as a “global model of inclusive development and technological leadership,” stating that India’s digital infrastructure is now being studied and replicated by several countries worldwide.
