Dhaka: Bangladesh is moving closer to a historic milestone in its energy sector with the development of its first nuclear power plant at Rooppur in Pabna district. The project, being built with Russian cooperation, is considered a major step toward transforming the country’s energy infrastructure.
2400 MW Power Generation Capacity with Two Reactors
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is being constructed with two advanced VVER-1200 reactors. Together, they will have a total electricity generation capacity of around 2,400 megawatts. Once operational, the plant is expected to significantly strengthen Bangladesh’s power supply system and reduce electricity shortages.
Russia’s Key Role in the Project
Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom is playing a central role in the development of the project. From reactor technology and construction to fuel supply and technical assistance, the entire project is being supported by Russian expertise. This makes Rooppur one of the most strategically significant energy collaborations between the two countries.
Fuel Loading Process Begins
According to recent updates, fuel loading has begun in the reactors, marking a critical step toward operational readiness. After this stage, the plant is expected to move closer to trial operations and eventual electricity generation.

The Government of Bangladesh views this project as a major step toward energy independence. It is expected to:
