During the scorching summer season, when heat and humidity drain your energy, the craving for something light, cooling, and delicious naturally increases. In such times, Chilla Raita emerges as a perfect dish. It is not only refreshing in taste but also light on the stomach and beneficial for digestion. An added advantage is that it allows you to creatively use leftover chillas, turning them into a delightful meal.
What is Chilla Raita?
Chilla Raita is a simple yet innovative dish where pieces of chilla—made from gram flour (besan) or moong dal—are mixed into chilled yogurt and enhanced with mild spices. The combination results in a unique blend of texture and flavor, making it an ideal summer accompaniment.
Ingredients:
- 2–3 prepared chillas (besan or moong dal)
- 1 cup fresh yogurt (curd)
- 1/2 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black salt
- Salt to taste
- 1 green chili (finely chopped)
- 1–2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh coriander
- A few mint leaves (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)
Method:
Begin by cutting the prepared chillas into small bite-sized pieces. In a bowl, whisk the yogurt until it becomes smooth and creamy. Add salt, black salt, roasted cumin powder, and chopped green chili, and mix well.
Now gently fold in the chilla pieces into the yogurt mixture, ensuring they do not break apart. Garnish with fresh coriander and mint leaves. If you prefer a hint of spice, sprinkle a little red chili powder on top.
Refrigerate the raita for about 10–15 minutes before serving, allowing the flavors to blend and intensify.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve this chilled Chilla Raita as a side dish with lunch or as a light snack. It pairs wonderfully with parathas, pulao, or even plain rice.
Health Benefits:
Chilla Raita is rich in protein, especially when made with moong dal chillas. Yogurt helps in cooling the body and improves digestion. This dish is particularly beneficial in summer as it helps keep the body hydrated and refreshed.
Whenever you feel like trying something light, unique, and refreshing in summer, Chilla Raita is a must-try. It perfectly balances taste and health while offering a cooling escape from the heat.
