Over 400 Dead in Kenya Cult Tragedy; Pastor Paul Mackenzie Found Guilty

Desk : A Kenyan court has found controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie and 28 of his associates guilty in a case involving the deaths of hundreds of people who allegedly starved themselves to death under the influence of a religious cult. The case, which came to light in 2023, sent shockwaves across the world after mass graves were discovered in the Shakahola Forest in coastal Kenya.

According to investigators, Mackenzie allegedly instructed his followers to stop eating, claiming that fasting would help them meet Jesus Christ and reach heaven before the end of the world. Several families, including children, reportedly followed his teachings and moved into the forest, where they were subjected to extreme starvation.

The court in Mombasa convicted Mackenzie and 28 co-accused in connection with the deaths of 190 children and one adult. The verdict highlighted the organised nature of the alleged starvation practices and the suffering inflicted on vulnerable followers.

Investigations into the Shakahola tragedy revealed more than 400 bodies buried in mass graves. The condition of several remains made identification extremely difficult, with reports indicating that only a small number of victims could be identified.

Families Left Devastated

The tragedy has left several families devastated. Among the victims was a family whose six children reportedly died after their mother took them to the Shakahola Forest in 2022. According to media reports, only one of the children’s bodies could be identified.

The case has exposed the devastating consequences of religious manipulation and the exploitation of vulnerable people in the name of faith.

Prosecution Seeks Death Penalty

Prosecutors have reportedly sought the death penalty for Mackenzie, while seeking life imprisonment for his co-accused. Mackenzie and the other accused have denied the allegations.

The case has raised serious questions about religious extremism, child protection and the responsibility of authorities to prevent individuals from exploiting religious beliefs to endanger human lives.

The Shakahola tragedy remains one of Kenya’s most shocking cases of mass deaths linked to a religious cult.
