India-Indonesia Ties Gain New Momentum, 20 Agreements Signed

Jakarta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described the outcomes of his discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as comprehensive, substantive, and futuristic, stating that the friendship between the two countries will continue to scale new heights in the coming years.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said, “The outcomes from this visit are comprehensive, substantive and futuristic. The India-Indonesia friendship will keep scaling new heights in the years to come.”

Following the bilateral and delegation-level talks between the two leaders, India and Indonesia signed 20 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) across key sectors including defence, critical minerals, space, agriculture, healthcare, digital technology, education, and maritime security.

Defence Cooperation Gets Major Boost with BrahMos Agreement

One of the key agreements focuses on cooperation in the BrahMos missile system, reflecting the growing capabilities of India’s defence industry. The partnership is expected to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and promote innovation, competitiveness, and defence exports.

The two nations also signed an agreement on air-to-air missile cooperation, aimed at enhancing technological collaboration and strengthening India’s indigenous missile development ecosystem.

IIM Bangalore Campus to be Established in Indonesia

India’s premier management institute Indian Institute of Management Bangalore will establish a branch campus at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Indonesia.

The initiative is expected to showcase India’s academic excellence globally and further strengthen India’s position as a knowledge and education hub.

Cooperation in Critical Minerals and Steel Sector

India and Indonesia agreed to enhance cooperation in minerals, mining, and steel supply chains. The agreement aims to encourage investments, promote advanced extraction and processing technologies, and support joint research and projects in critical mineral sectors.

A strategic joint venture between Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and PT Krakatau Steel was also announced for establishing a stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia. The project is expected to boost industrial growth and create employment opportunities.

Greater Maritime Security Partnership

The two countries extended their framework for maritime safety and security cooperation, strengthening coordination between their Coast Guard forces.

The agreement will enhance maritime domain awareness, search and rescue operations, capacity building, and cooperation for ensuring safety and freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Advancement in Space, Agriculture and Healthcare Cooperation

India and Indonesia agreed to expand cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space, including joint research, technology sharing, and capacity building.

In agriculture, both sides will work together on sustainable farming practices, agricultural technology, crop development, and research initiatives aimed at improving food security and farmers’ incomes.

India will also provide 100 tonnes of high-quality DWR 162 wheat seeds to Indonesia to support food security and strengthen agricultural cooperation.

In the healthcare sector, an agreement between India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and Indonesia’s BPOM will promote cooperation in medical product regulation, regulatory standards, and market access.

Digital Technology and Innovation Partnership

India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Indonesia Open Network (ION) will collaborate to promote digital public infrastructure.

The partnership aims to use technology-driven solutions to make digital services more accessible, efficient, and inclusive.

Cultural and Educational Ties Strengthened

India and Indonesia will commemorate the Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy, celebrating the shared educational vision of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and Indonesian education pioneer Ki Hajar Dewantara.

The year-long programme will include cultural, academic, and people-to-people initiatives, highlighting the historic civilisational connection between the two nations.

New Chapter in India-Indonesia Strategic Partnership

The agreements signed during Prime Minister Modi’s visit are expected to further deepen India-Indonesia cooperation in strategic sectors. From defence and technology to education, agriculture, and cultural exchanges, the partnership aims to create new opportunities for both countries.
