Desk : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval were also present during the meeting.
The meeting came as G7 leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, announcing a series of measures aimed at strengthening Kyiv’s defence capabilities and increasing pressure on Moscow.
In a joint declaration issued at the conclusion of their discussions, the Heads of State and Government of the G7 expressed their “unwavering support” for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. The leaders praised the resilience of the Ukrainian people and acknowledged the progress made by Ukrainian forces in recent months despite continued attacks on the country’s critical infrastructure and cultural heritage.
The declaration emphasized that there is renewed momentum toward achieving a resolution to the conflict and reiterated the G7’s commitment to standing with Ukraine for as long as necessary.
To bolster Ukraine’s defence preparedness, the G7 nations agreed to provide additional air defence systems, interceptors, and long-range ammunition. The leaders also supported granting licences that would enable Ukraine to expand its domestic military production capabilities.
Recognizing the challenges posed by the approaching winter season, the group pledged further assistance to strengthen Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and ensure the country’s energy security.
The G7 leaders further announced plans to intensify sanctions on Russia, particularly targeting its oil and gas sectors, as part of broader efforts to increase economic pressure on Moscow.
The declaration also welcomed the recently announced peace agreement between the United States and Iran, with leaders expressing hope that renewed diplomatic engagement could contribute to broader international stability and support efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Zelenskyy underscores India’s continued engagement with key global stakeholders amid evolving geopolitical developments and ongoing efforts to promote dialogue and peace.
