Desk : The Bharatiya Janata Party’s sweeping victory in the West Bengal and Assam Assembly elections has triggered concern in Bangladesh, particularly over the possibility of stricter border measures and alleged “pushback” actions along the India-Bangladesh border.
Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said Dhaka hopes that no forced return or cross-border pushback incidents would take place following the election results. He added that Bangladesh wishes to maintain stable and friendly relations with India, but developments along the border are being closely monitored.
The concern comes in the backdrop of the BJP’s aggressive campaign on the issue of illegal infiltration during the West Bengal elections. BJP leaders repeatedly alleged that illegal migration from Bangladesh had received political protection over the years, affecting both national security and demographic balance in border regions. The party also promised stricter border management and tougher action against illegal immigration.
Following the BJP’s victory, discussions have intensified in Bangladeshi political and media circles over whether India could adopt a more assertive border policy. Reports suggest that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has also been instructed to remain alert and increase surveillance in sensitive border areas.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders have described the party’s victory in West Bengal as a mandate against “appeasement politics” and illegal infiltration. The party has indicated that issues related to national security and border control will receive greater priority under the new administration.
