Desk : Indian peacekeepers deployed under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have once again brought laurels to the country on the global stage. A total of 565 Indian Blue Helmets, including 53 women peacekeepers, have been awarded the prestigious United Nations Medal for their exemplary service in the mission area.
The medals were conferred during a formal ceremony held in Malakal, South Sudan, where contingents from India and Rwanda serving under UNMISS were jointly honoured for their contribution to peacekeeping operations.
Key Role in Protecting Civilians and Supporting Communities
According to UN officials, Indian peacekeepers have played a crucial role in maintaining stability and protecting civilians in conflict-affected regions. Their work has included regular patrols in vulnerable areas, engagement with local communities, humanitarian assistance, veterinary support camps, training programmes for women on self-defence, and awareness campaigns against gender-based violence.
UN representatives praised the discipline, professionalism, and resilience of the Indian contingent, noting their ability to operate effectively in extremely challenging security conditions.
India Among Top Contributors to UN Peacekeeping
India remains one of the largest contributors to United Nations peacekeeping missions worldwide. At present, more than 4,200 Indian military and police personnel are deployed across various UN missions, including South Sudan, Congo, Lebanon, and Somalia.
India’s participation in peacekeeping operations is widely recognised for its scale, professionalism, and commitment to humanitarian principles.
Legacy of Sacrifice
India’s contribution to UN peacekeeping also carries a significant legacy of sacrifice. Nearly 180 Indian peacekeepers have lost their lives while serving under the UN flag, one of the highest among contributing nations.
