Desk:Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed optimism that the Russia-Ukraine war could end quickly under Donald Trump’s presidency. Speaking with Ukrainian media outlet Suspilne, Zelensky stated that Trump’s administration has outlined policies that could expedite the war’s conclusion. He also acknowledged that Trump’s commitment to ending the conflict aligns with the promises made during his election campaign.
Zelensky remarked, “It is clear that Trump and his team have plans to end the war sooner. Now that he is set to take office, we must believe that his approach will bring a resolution. He has vowed to fulfill his promises to his people, and he will deliver.”
During their recent interaction, Zelensky and Trump agreed on the necessity of ending the war. Zelensky emphasized that their discussion did not diminish Ukraine’s position, nor did it suggest compromising Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Trump’s Perspective on the Russia-Ukraine War
Throughout his campaign, Trump repeatedly pledged to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict within 24 hours if elected president. He criticized the Biden administration’s extensive aid to Ukraine, even calling Zelensky “a businessman.” Trump argued that the war would never have occurred under his leadership.
In one of his rallies, Trump claimed, “The war is not Vladimir Putin’s fault—it’s Zelensky’s. If I were president, this war wouldn’t have happened. But since it has, I can end it within a single day.”
Concerns Among Ukrainians
An NPR report highlighted fears among Ukrainians that Trump might pressure Ukraine to cede territory to achieve peace. Some of Trump’s allies, like JD Vance, have suggested creating a buffer zone in the contested areas to bring about a resolution.
Russia’s Stance on Trump’s Win
Following Trump’s election victory, Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, expressed readiness for peace talks under Trump’s mediation. Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Gennady Gatilov, stated, “We are realists. If Trump initiates peace talks, we are open to discussions. However, any negotiations must protect Russia’s interests.”
While Trump’s claims of ending the war “overnight” are viewed with skepticism, they have sparked hope and debate on the possibility of a swift resolution to the long-standing conflict.
