Chinese President Xi Jinping appears to be taking military readiness seriously, as he has repeatedly emphasized that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) must stay prepared for war. Recent satellite imagery reveals major military developments in China, including the construction of fortified airbases and a massive new command complex designed to protect troops during bombings. These developments suggest that China is significantly bolstering its military infrastructure.
One of the most alarming revelations is a new war-time command-and-control center under construction approximately 25-30 km southwest of Beijing. According to a report by the Financial Times at the end of January, this site is being designed to function as a military command center for the PLA. Spanning about 1,500 acres, this facility is reportedly ten times larger than the Pentagon. Satellite images reveal deep underground bunkers, believed to provide protection in case of a nuclear attack. Once completed, it could be the world’s largest military command center, with some referring to it as the “Beijing Military City.”
A 4-Kilometer-Wide Military Complex
Reports indicate that over 100 cranes are working daily at this massive construction site, which spans nearly 4 kilometers in width. The facility is being built deep underground to enhance survivability in the event of an aerial attack or heavy bombardment. However, detailed information about this complex remains scarce, and independent verification of some claims is difficult.
Additionally, reports suggest that the facility includes multiple underground nodes connected by a subway-like tunnel network. This has raised serious global security concerns, prompting questions about China’s military intentions. Given the scale of these developments, it is crucial for the international community to seek transparency and answers about the purpose and strategic significance of this new military facility.
