Geneva: The World Health Organization on Tuesday called for a halt to the sale of live wild mammals in food markets to prevent the emergence of new diseases.
“Animals, particularly wild animals, are the source of more than 70% of all emerging infectious diseases in humans, many of which are caused by novel viruses. Wild mammals, in particular, pose a risk for the emergence of new diseases,” WHO said in a statement.
In January this year, a team of experts from WHO visited China. This team also claimed in its report that the corona virus probably came to humans through animals. It was said in the report that it is most likely that the corona virus from bats went to another animal and spread to humans from there. Researchers cited four major reasons for the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In these, the possibility of spreading the infection through one animal to another has been considered as the major cause. The possibility of an infection from bats directly into humans has been reported to be negligible.
