No Afghan ‘Reintegration’ Without Progress On Rights: UN

Desk Report: On the fourth anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a key resolution titled “Support for a Just and Lasting Peace in Ukraine.” The resolution received the backing of 107 out of 193 member states, while 12 countries voted against it. India was among 51 nations that abstained from the voting process.

The resolution calls for an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. It was introduced to mark four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and emphasizes the need for a comprehensive and lasting peace based on international law.

India Reiterates Its Position

India chose not to participate in the vote, maintaining its consistent stance that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path to resolving the conflict. Other major countries that abstained included the United States, China, Brazil, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Bahrain.

Zelenskyy Thanks Supporting Nations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the 107 countries that supported the resolution. In a post on social media platform X, he described the adoption of the resolution as an important step toward achieving a just and lasting peace, ensuring a complete ceasefire, and facilitating the return of Ukrainian citizens. He stated that Ukraine would continue working closely with its international partners to secure peace.

Guterres Calls War a Violation of International Law

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the ongoing conflict, calling it a violation of the UN Charter and international law. Marking the fourth anniversary of the invasion, he described the war as a stain on the global conscience and a serious threat to regional and international peace and security.

Guterres stressed that the longer the war continues, the more devastating its consequences will be, particularly for civilians. He reiterated his call for an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire as the first step toward a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace—one that respects Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The adoption of the resolution is being viewed as another diplomatic effort by the international community to push for peace, even as divisions among major global powers remain evident.
