Desk:As the Ukraine-Russia war enters its third year, tensions have escalated further. On Sunday, Russia launched massive drone attacks on 13 Ukrainian cities, firing 276 drones and three missiles in a single strike. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has intensified diplomatic pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Notably, Putin has held multiple rounds of discussions with former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the Ukraine crisis—without involving Ukraine or NATO. This diplomatic maneuvering has left Zelensky increasingly isolated, leading to a surprising statement from him.
On Sunday, Zelensky made a bold declaration, stating that he is willing to step down as Ukraine’s president—on one condition. He said, “If Ukraine can gain NATO membership in return, I am ready to resign immediately.” Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky emphasized, “If peace comes to Ukraine and if my resignation is necessary for that, I am ready to accept it. I will step down in exchange for NATO membership.” He reiterated his willingness to resign “immediately” if it helps secure Ukraine’s security.
Zelensky’s statement underscores Ukraine’s persistent efforts to join NATO, despite opposition from Russia, which sees NATO expansion as a threat to its security. His remarks highlight his unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s defense and security.
This announcement comes at a critical juncture when Trump, after discussions with Putin, has ramped up his criticism of Zelensky, calling him “stubborn and authoritarian.” Meanwhile, Putin has stressed the importance of upcoming elections in Ukraine as a “necessary step toward peace.” Trump has also echoed Putin’s stance.
Ukraine finds itself in an increasingly vulnerable position, as the previous Biden administration had been providing consistent military and financial aid to Kyiv. However, under Trump, U.S. support for Ukraine has weakened, leaving Zelensky further isolated on the global stage.
Ukraine’s NATO membership remains a crucial geopolitical issue, backed by Western nations but firmly opposed by Russia. Zelensky’s statement raises new questions about Ukraine’s future and signals his willingness to make significant sacrifices for the country’s best interests.
