New Delhi: In the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the central government has swung into action, initiating a series of high-level meetings in the national capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) at his residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. The meeting was attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. After the meeting, PM Modi took to Twitter to confirm he chaired the CCS meeting.
Interestingly, Amit Shah was seen carrying a red file while leaving for the PM’s residence, hinting at the gravity of the agenda. The meeting focused on the response to the terror attack, deployment of security forces, and India’s stance on international platforms.
Following the CCS meeting, Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah held a separate one-on-one discussion, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. Amit Shah has since left the PM’s residence. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is expected to hold an official briefing shortly, detailing India’s strategy and response post the attack.
In a strong retaliatory move against Pakistan, the government has announced several key decisions:
- Immediate suspension of water supply to Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty.
- Closure of the Attari-Wagah border for general public movement.
- Implementation of a “No Entry for Pakistani Citizens” policy – barring any Pakistani nationals from entering India.
- Expulsion of Pakistan’s High Commissioner, who has been asked to return to Islamabad.
During the MEA’s Wednesday briefing, India strongly called out Pakistan, stating that there is clear evidence of cross-border terror links in the Pahalgam attack, pointing directly to Pakistan’s involvement.
The CCS meeting chaired by PM Modi is being seen as a crucial step in shaping India’s national security approach following the attack. Discussions reportedly revolved around the conspiracy behind the attack, protective measures, and future strategy.
An official response from the MEA is expected shortly, shedding more light on India’s next diplomatic and strategic moves.
