Durga Puja or Vijayadashmi celebrates Maa Durga’s victory over demon Mahishasura to protect dharma. Whereas, the story behind Dussehra signifies Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana.
‘Vijaya’ means victory. In this context, it refers to the victory of Mother Goddess Durga (the good/Dharma) over a demon-named Mahishasura (evil/Adharma).
It is believed that goddess Durga fought with demon Mahishasur (who represents egoistism) for nine days and the final day, when the demon was beheaded by her, is called Vijay Dashmi. Dussehra commemorates the day when Lord Rama killed the ten headed demon king Ravana. It also signifies the end of negativity and evil within us (biases, prejudices, stereotypes) and marks a fresh new beginning.
Celebrating a festival in right spirit without harming the environment is a goal to be fulfilled. Here is a list of ideas to celebrate eco-friendly Durga Puja/Dussehra this year:
⦁ Avoid idols made of plaster of Paris or plastic.
⦁ Use eco-friendly clay idols for puja and take a step towards responsible celebration.
⦁ Use natural colours to paint idols.
⦁ Use LED/CFL bulbs or energy-saving electrical products.
⦁ Try to use candles or diyas instead of electric lights that look more traditional and beautiful.
⦁ For making a Rangoli, use natural powders made from pulses, rice flour, turmeric and leaves.
⦁ Use natural items like palm leaves and natural powders for the mandap decoration.
With our conscious efforts, together we can make a better world.
Shubh Celebration.
