Desk:The Taliban government in Afghanistan has introduced a new law prohibiting windows in newly constructed homes to prevent women from seeing the outside world. According to the decree issued by the Taliban’s supreme leader, glimpses of women from windows could allegedly lead to “immoral acts.”
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid shared a statement on social media platform X, emphasizing that new buildings should not have windows that reveal courtyards, kitchens, neighboring wells, or areas frequented by women.
Mujahid further explained that women working in kitchens, walking through courtyards, or drawing water from wells could provoke indecent behavior if seen by others. Municipal authorities and other relevant departments have been tasked with monitoring new constructions to ensure compliance. Property owners are required to either build walls or implement measures to obstruct any view of women from neighboring houses.
For existing homes with windows overlooking neighboring properties, homeowners must make arrangements to block visibility. The Taliban aims to create an environment where women are neither seen by outsiders nor can they view the outside world.
Since their return to power in August 2021, the Taliban has been steadily imposing restrictions on women’s rights. Women are banned from working, pursuing higher education, and even visiting parks or other public spaces. A recent law also prohibits women from singing or reciting poetry in public.
The United Nations has repeatedly expressed concern over the Taliban’s harsh policies against women and girls, urging the regime to respect basic human rights.
