Islamabad: During his visit to Islamabad for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a strong message to Pakistan on its own soil. He emphasized that terrorism and trade cannot be encouraged simultaneously, stating that cooperation between nations is only possible when there is mutual respect. Jaishankar pointed out that real partnerships can only thrive if they are based on sincerity and that unilateral agendas cannot drive relationships forward.
He made it clear that as long as cross-border terrorism and extremism continue, progress in areas like trade, energy, and connectivity cannot be achieved. Jaishankar further added that the SCO member states must act in accordance with the organization’s charter to foster development. His remarks were a direct reminder to Pakistan about India’s stance on cross-border terrorism, which has long been a hurdle in bilateral ties.
During his speech, Jaishankar also highlighted the global challenges facing the world, including two major conflicts, which he said are having significant repercussions worldwide. Despite being in Islamabad, Jaishankar maintained his firm tone, a quality for which he is well known.
He reiterated that peace and stability are essential for progress and development. Without these, he argued, the path to economic growth is not feasible. Additionally, he called for collaborative efforts in boosting connectivity, which would, in turn, enhance global energy capabilities and lay the groundwork for significant global changes.
India has repeatedly conveyed to Pakistan that dialogue will not be possible until cross-border terrorism stops. Reaffirming India’s position, Jaishankar emphasized that trade, energy flows, and connectivity cannot thrive in the shadow of terrorism and extremism.
