New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lit the “Golden Victory Torches” at the eternal flames of the National War Memorial in the capital Delhi on the occasion of 50 years of the Indo-Pakistan war and sent them to different parts of the country including the villages of the Paramveer Chakra and Mahavir Chakra Awardees of the 1971 war. In addition to the villages of these Awardees, the soil of the 1971 battlegrounds will be brought to the National War Memorial in New Delhi.
Today marks the 50 years of 1971 war i.e. Victory Day. Bangladesh came into existence as a country after this war and India made Pakistan bite the dust. Victory Day is celebrated on 16 December every year to mark India’s victory in liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. On this occasion, PM Modi went to the National War Memorial and paid tribute to the heroes of 1971 war and then lit the ‘Golden Victory Torch’.
The event, organized on the occasion, was attended by PM Modi along with Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) Vipin Rawat and the Tri-service chiefs.

In December 1971, the Indian Armed Forces won a decisive and historic victory over the Pakistani Army, resulting in the creation of a nation – Bangladesh and also the largest military surrender since the Second World War. It is noteworthy that 16 December is celebrated as Victory Day in India. On this day, India won against Pakistan in 1971, as a result of which Bangladesh came into existence as a country.
