Islamabad: Pakistani media has reported that PM Narendra Modi has written a letter to former Prime Minister of Pakistan and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif expressing condolences on his mother’s demise. According to Dawn News, the letter was handed over by the Indian embassy last week to PML-N vice-president and Nawaz’s daughter Maryam Nawaz and requested to convey the message to Nawaz Sharif, who has been living in London since last year.
Begum Shamim Akhtar, mother of Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif, died in the UK on 22 November. Her body was brought to Pakistan and handed over to Lahore. According to the letter shown in the Pakistani media, it has been written on 27 November. In this, PM Modi has deeply mourned the death of Nawaz Sharif’s mother.
It is written in the letter, “Dear Mian Sahib, I am deeply saddened to learn about the demise of your mother Begum Shamim Akhtar in London. My heartfelt condolences are with you in this hour of intense grief.”
“PM Modi, remembering his meeting with Nawaz’s mother in Lahore in 2015, wrote,” Her simplicity and warmth were truly heart-warming. In this moment of profound grief, I pray to the Almighty to bestow strength upon you and your family to bear this irreparable loss.”
On December 11, Indian Charge d’Affaires Gaurav Ahluwalia wrote a letter to Maryam Nawaz and sent PM Modi’s letter to her in Lahore. It says that PM Modi’s message should be conveyed to Nawaz Sharif. Significantly, in December 2015, PM Modi suddenly arrived in Lahore while returning from Kabul. Here Nawaz Sharif welcomed him and He was received by Sharif and both leaders had flown to Raiwind from Lahore airport in a helicopter. Modi had briefly attended the wedding ceremony of Nawaz Sharif’s granddaughter here.
